The Maranhão Crafts Marketing Centre, «CEPRAMA», is a state culture showcase run by the tourism department, housed in the old «Hemp Spinning and Weaving Company» building in the Madre Deus district of São Luís, built in 1891. The mill ran until the early 1970s with 105 looms and 220 workers, producing about 1.4 million metres of coarse cloth a year. The centre was founded in 1989 and holds a permanent crafts market all year round in 4,107 square metres, where 38 stalls sell goods made of buriti and tucum palm fibre, glazed tiles, wicker, horn, spices, wood, pottery and the costumes of folk festival groups. Favourite buys include replica Portuguese tiles, miniatures of the «Bumba-meu-boi» ox, emblem of Maranhão's June festivities, oil paintings, lace and regional sweets. Shows and events take place in its outdoor area, especially during the June festival season. Entry is free; it is the place for gifts from São Luís.
