Colmar's main public park, east of the old town a short walk away. It is a wide rectangular space with large old trees, paths, benches and a fountain — the only significant green space in a city whose centre is dense with timber houses and narrow lanes. That is its practical value: Colmar is a small and beautiful city but its centre is very crowded in season — the old town and La Petite Venise fill with visitors and walking becomes slow. The park is minutes away and entirely quiet. The city's events and seasonal markets are held here, and in December it forms part of Colmar's Christmas markets, which spread across several squares and are among the best known in France. Free and always open. Shade is generous thanks to the large trees, useful in the hot Alsatian summer.

East of the old town, Colmar
From late November to the end of December, spread across five or six squares in the old town, each with a different character. Colmar is among France's best-known Christmas market destinations, which means heavy crowds at weekends and early hotel booking.
The Unterlinden museum and its Isenheim altarpiece, among the most important paintings in Europe and worth the visit alone. Then the old town and La Petite Venise on the canal, the Maison des Têtes, and walking between the coloured timber houses. The city is small and a day covers it.
