The city museum in the heart of Chengdu, on the west side of the great Tianfu Square, in a modern building designed by Sutherland Hussey Harris after they won an international competition in 2007, next to the provincial library and the art museum. It tells Chengdu's story over thousands of years, from the ancient Shu kingdom through the Three Kingdoms era and the dynasties that followed to modern times, with thousands of objects from sites across the city. Its floors also hold galleries of Chinese shadow puppets and traditional puppetry and changing temporary exhibitions, and its upper windows look out over Tianfu Square. Entry is free with advance booking through the museum's WeChat account and a passport for foreigners; it opens Tuesday to Sunday from 09:00 until 20:30 in summer and 20:00 in winter, closed Mondays, per visitor guides.
