The largest mosque in Sichuan, in central Chengdu near Tianfu Square; its name means «mosque by the palace wall», after an old palace that stood on the site, and it was founded in the sixteenth century. The mosque was rebuilt in 1858 and badly damaged in a war in 1917; its present building has stood since November 1998, blending Islamic architecture with the Chinese styles of the Ming and Qing dynasties. It has a large prayer hall, ablution rooms and a library, and serves Chengdu's Hui and other Muslims, with halal restaurants nearby serving Sichuan dishes and hand-pulled noodles. Entry is free for worshippers and visitors, dressed modestly and respecting prayer times; it's a short walk from the Chengdu Museum and Tianfu Square.
