The commercial heart of Chengdu, a pedestrian street established in 1924 to link the city's two main shopping areas of the time, which has grown into a large district of shopping, dining and entertainment around Zhongshan Square. It is ringed by big malls and international and local stores, the best known being Taikoo Li, with elegant low-rise buildings inspired by traditional architecture, and the IFS mall, where a giant panda sculpture climbing the facade has become one of the city's most famous images. The district is busy with young people and shoppers until late, with Sichuan hotpot restaurants and snack stalls everywhere, and it's served by Chunxi Road metro station on Lines 2 and 3. Wandering is free, and evenings are best, when the shopfronts light up. Sichuan hotpot usually contains animal fat and non-halal meat, so ask about ingredients or look for halal restaurants run by Hui Muslims.
