The Cholera Fountain is a Gothic-styled stone monument standing near Dresden's opera house. It looks more like a small pointed spire than an ordinary fountain, and it rises about eighteen metres. The story behind it is unusual: in the 1840s a cholera epidemic swept Europe but did not reach Dresden. A nobleman paid for this fountain in thanks for the city being spared. The design is neo-Gothic with a great deal of carved detail: pointed arches, stone ornament and small figures. The style was fashionable at the time because it evoked the Middle Ages. The monument survived the bombing of 1945 that destroyed everything around it, which makes it one of the few original pieces in this area. The visit is free and very short, and it lies on your route between Schlossplatz and the opera house.
