The beating heart of old Jodhpur, a tall stone clock tower known locally as the Ghanta Ghar, built under Maharaja Sardar Singh in the late nineteenth century and ringed by the bazaars of Sardar Market, which bears his name. Narrow lanes full of life branch off the square around the tower, selling spices, colourful fabrics, textiles, silverware, bangles, curios and handicrafts, alongside sweet shops and street-food stalls. From the square you can see the towering walls of Mehrangarh Fort on the hill, and rooftop cafés around it give a lovely view of the tower and the fort together; wandering here is the best way to discover the soul of the «Blue City». Wandering is free; late afternoon and evening are best, when the bazaars come alive and the tower is lit. Bargain calmly, watch your belongings in the crowds and check food ingredients.
