One of the largest and most magnificent forts in India, on top of a rocky hill rising about 122 m above the plain around Jodhpur; the Rathore ruler Rao Jodha built it around 1459, though most of its present buildings date from the seventeenth century. Visitors pass through seven great gates, among them the Jai Pol, the victory gate built in 1806, and inside are finely carved palaces around wide courtyards, including the Moti Mahal (Pearl Palace), the Phool Mahal (Flower Palace) and a mirror palace. The fort holds one of Rajasthan's richest museums, with royal palanquins, elephant howdahs, arms, costumes and miniature paintings, and its walls give an unforgettable view of the «Blue City», its blue-painted houses spread out below. Foreign visitors pay about ₹600 including an audio guide, per visitor guides; it opens daily, and a lift shortens the climb. Allow half a day and come in the morning, before the heat.
