A historic stepwell in the lanes of old Jodhpur, about 300 m from Mehrangarh Fort, generally dated to around 1740 and traditionally credited to Rani Tanwarji, the wife of Maharaja Abhay Singh. Its carved sandstone steps descend in symmetrical geometric patterns to the water at the bottom, with fine carving and niches on its walls; for generations it supplied water to the old city before falling into neglect. In recent years it was restored and cleaned, bringing it back to life as one of Jodhpur's favourite photo spots, ringed by cafés and small shops in restored old houses. It's free to visit at any time and a short walk from the Clock Tower. Morning light is the softest, and the steps can be slippery, so take care going down.
