Confeitaria Colombo is a historic café and pastry shop in central Rio, founded by two Portuguese immigrants in 1894 and counted by many among the most beautiful cafés in the world. Between 1912 and 1918 its halls were redone in Art Nouveau style, with huge crystal mirrors brought from Antwerp in rosewood frames and carved wooden furniture. In 1922 a second floor with a tea room was added, and through an opening in the ground-floor ceiling you can see its stained-glass skylight. The café was a meeting place for Brazil's writers, artists and thinkers, called a branch of the Brazilian Academy of Letters, and presidents and monarchs have visited. Visitors come for coffee and Portuguese pastries in the historic hall, so expect a queue at busy times. Some savoury pastries contain pork or lard, so ask before ordering.
