The Theatro Municipal is one of Brazil's most beautiful and important theatres, on Cinelândia square in central Rio, near the National Library and the Museum of Fine Arts. It was designed in eclectic style after the Paris Opéra, and the names of European and Brazilian artists are carved on its outer walls. Built in four and a half years, a record for its time, it was opened by the president of the republic on 14 July 1909 with seats for about 1,739, expanded in 1934 to 2,205. Inside are a marble foyer, grand staircases and gilded halls. Guided visits of about 45 minutes run, some in English and Spanish, with tickets sold at the box office on the day only. For the full experience, come to an opera or ballet.
