The Palácio Tiradentes opened on 6 May 1926 on the site of the Casa de Câmara e Cadeia, the council house and jail built here in 1640. It was the seat of Brazil's Chamber of Deputies from 1926 until the capital moved to Brasília in 1960, then of the Rio de Janeiro state legislature until 2021. Today it is a «Place of Memory of Parliament» open to the public. Guided visits are free Monday to Friday 10:00-17:00, with no booking needed for individuals. It stands next to the Paço Imperial near Praça XV, so the two are easily seen together.
