Brașov's living room: the Council Square is a rectangle of coloured Baroque facades around the old Council House with its tower (1420), and behind it rise the Black Church and Mount Tâmpa with white BRASOV letters on its slope — Transylvania's loveliest square and its liveliest. Here were the markets, the pillory and the trials; today cafés spread umbrellas over the paving, a fountain at the centre draws children, festivals fill it in summer and a Christmas market with a giant tree in December. The Council House holds the county history museum, and the yellow Hirscher House on its side is among the oldest merchant houses. Every street branches from it: pedestrian Republicii with its restaurants, Rope Street — among Europe's narrowest lanes — and Sforii towards the old gates. Start here and return here.
