The city's forest balcony: the stone Diana tower (1914) on Friendship Hill at 562 metres — the ascent half the pleasure: the warm timber 1912 funicular climbs its forest cut from behind the famous Hotel Pupp in minutes, or graded woodland paths for lovers of the walk through spruce and beech. From its gallery (stairs — or, mercifully, a lift inside the tower) Karlovy Vary unrolls along the Teplá valley as a coloured ribbon amid endless forest hills — the city self-explained from above: a spa in a forest, no sprawl beyond its valley. The summit is a complete family outing: a hill restaurant, a small tropical butterfly house beside (fold it into the visit), a mini-zoo, and branching descent trails — walking back down through woods to the Deer Leap crags the ideal afternoon close.

Paradoxically clearest in freezing bright winter — in summer, morning before heat-haze. Autumn gilds the forests peaking in October — and sunset reddens the valley beautifully from the gallery, but the last funicular descends fairly early: check its time or walk down with a light.
