The Dom Bosco Sanctuary, a Catholic church in Brasília's Asa Sul, is famous for its stained glass: between eighty 16-metre columns, the pointed openings are filled with glass in twelve shades of blue by the Belgian artist Hubert van Doorne, bathing the interior in blue light. The architect Carlos Alberto Naves designed it in a modern style with openings that recall Gothic architecture, and the Salesians built it between 1963 and 1970. It is dedicated to St John Bosco, the city's second patron saint, who is said to have dreamt in 1883 of a land beside a lake in South America, a dream later linked to the founding of Brasília. A 3.5-metre chandelier made of 7,400 pieces of Murano glass hangs at its centre, and the gardens outside are by Roberto Burle Marx. It opens daily and entry is free; modest dress and quiet during mass are appreciated.
