The Brasília TV Tower is a broadcast tower 224 metres high, opened in 1967 on the Monumental Axis and designed by Lúcio Costa, the city's planner. A triangular concrete base carries a steel mast, and at 75 metres an observation deck reached by a free lift reveals the whole plan of the city: the north and south wings, the Monumental Axis with its buildings out to the Congress, and Lake Paranoá on the horizon. Note: the observation deck closed for renovation in November 2025 and was expected to reopen in October 2026, so check before you go. At the foot of the tower a well-known craft and food fair runs at weekends, selling leatherwork, gemstones and local sweets, beside a large fountain and gardens, which makes it a good place for an evening outing with the family.
