The Luiz Cruls Planetarium is the only fixed public planetarium in the Federal District, in the Cultural Diffusion Sector of the Monumental Axis between the TV Tower and the Ulysses Guimarães Convention Centre. It opened on 15 March 1974. It was designed by the architect Sérgio Bernardes in Brutalist style, with bare concrete and a geometric shape recalling a flying saucer, built around two hemispherical domes, one inside the other. The original plan included 16 aquariums on the upper floor «to unite sky and sea», but tests failed when the glass supports could not hold the water's pressure, so the building kept only its space theme. It closed with structural problems in 2006 and underwent a major renovation until it reopened on 11 December 2013. It is described as one of the capital's least-known sights despite its prime location. Check the show times.
