Because the church was built in widely separated phases across centuries, each completed in the style and to the budget of its time. This is common in European churches but unusually visible here. Read the building from the bottom up and you will notice the stone and detailing change.

What catches the eye immediately is the two towers: one Gothic with a stone spire, the other entirely different in form and height. That mismatch is not a mistake but the result of centuries of interrupted building — each period added in its own manner, and the church carries the evidence plainly. The main doorway is Renaissance and differs from the Gothic body behind it, another detail of the same kind. The interior is broad Gothic with tall columns and stained glass. The site carries weight in the city's Christian history: it is thought to stand on a much older church connected with the Lyon martyrs of the second century, and there is a crypt below. Practical points: entry is free and the church is in use. It sits in the middle of the shopping district, so you pass it regardless. The visit is short and folds into a walk along the Presqu'île between Place des Terreaux and Place Bellecour.
