The first mosque built in Bosnia after the Ottoman conquest, completed in 1457 on the south bank of the Miljacka river and dedicated by Isa-beg Isaković to Sultan Mehmed the Conqueror, hence its name, the Emperor's or Sultan's Mosque. It is the largest single-dome mosque in the country. The first mosque was of wood and smaller. It was ruined by the end of the 15th century and rebuilt in 1565 in the classical Ottoman style, this time dedicated to Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent. Side rooms were added in 1800 and joined to the prayer hall in 1848. It has a spacious prayer hall and a finely crafted mihrab, and its painted interior decoration was restored between 1980 and 1983. Its courtyard has a flower-decked arcade, and beside it lies a graveyard with the tombs of viziers, scholars, muftis, sheikhs and notable Sarajevans. It was damaged in the Second World War and in the wars of the 1990s, and its restoration was completed in 2020. Isa-beg also built a bridge leading straight to the mosque; the Austro-Hungarian authorities took it apart and rebuilt it a few metres upstream, where it stands today as the Emperor's Bridge. The mosque is a few minutes' walk from Baščaršija and welcomes visitors outside prayer times in modest dress, per visitor guides.
