The largest historic mosque in Bosnia and Herzegovina and one of the finest Ottoman buildings in the Balkans, in the heart of Baščaršija; it is the main congregational mosque of the country's Muslims. It was built in 1530 as the centrepiece of the endowment of Gazi Husrev-beg, the Ottoman governor of Bosnia, which also included a primary school, a madrasa, a covered market and a hammam. Gazi Husrev-beg rests in a mausoleum beside it. Its design is most likely the work of the Ottoman architect Acem Ali Tabrizi, and masons from Ragusa (Dubrovnik) took part in the building. A large dome and a tall minaret rise over the prayer hall, a portico on four wide columns topped by small domes fronts it, and its portal is richly decorated with muqarnas. In 1898 it became the first mosque in the world to receive electricity and electric lighting. Its courtyard has a beautiful wooden ablution fountain (šadrvan) and shady trees. The mosque was badly damaged during the siege of Sarajevo; restoration began in 1996, and the Bosnian calligrapher Hazim Numanagić designed its new interior decoration in 2001 and 2002. Visitors can enter the prayer hall for 3 KM with an English-speaking guide, according to the mosque's official site: from 1 April to 31 October 9:00-12:00, 14:30-16:00 and 17:30-19:00; from November to March 9:00-11:00; and during Ramadan 9:00-12:00 and 17:30-19:00. The courtyard is open all day per visitor guides, and modest dress with a headscarf for women is advisable.
