Sarajevo's old bazaar and the historic and cultural heart of the city, on the north bank of the Miljacka river. It began in 1462, when Isa-beg Isaković built a han surrounded by many shops, and its Turkish-derived name means «the main bazaar». Cobbled lanes branch off its square, named after the old crafts, such as the coppersmiths' lane (Kazandžiluk), the goldsmiths' lane (Kujundžiluk) and the saddlers' lane (Sarači). Their low wooden shops still sell hammered copperware, carpets and souvenirs, alongside cafés and ćevapi and burek restaurants. In the middle of the square stands the Sebilj, an Ottoman-style wooden fountain built by Mehmed Pasha Kukavica in 1753. It burned in 1852 and was rebuilt by the Austrian architect Alexander Wittek in 1891, a few metres from its first site. Local legend says that whoever drinks from it will one day return to Sarajevo. Many landmarks ring the square, among them the Gazi Husrev-beg Mosque, Morića Han and the clock tower. The square is always open and free. It gets crowded in the evening and in summer, and its flocks of pigeons are a familiar sight. The lanes are paved with stone, so comfortable shoes help, and it is best explored in the morning before the crowds or in the evening under the lights.
