One point should be clear before visiting: the collection consists mainly of bronze sculpture, prints, graphic work and book illustrations rather than his famous oil paintings. Dalí's best-known canvases are in museums in Spain and America. Anyone arriving expecting The Persistence of Memory will be disappointed. What you actually see is striking in its own way: sculptures of the melting clocks and the long-legged elephants, designed furniture, and a large body of illustration for books including Alice in Wonderland and Don Quixote. The display is in a darkened space with theatrical lighting and music, a manner some enjoy and others find overdone. Practical points: it opens daily with relatively long hours and is among the few Paris museums that does not close one day a week. Its Montmartre location makes it easy to combine with Sacré-Cœur and Place du Tertre.
