The Ethnological Museum is housed in the Emin Gjiku complex, an 18th-century Ottoman house in Pristina's old town that belonged to the Gjikolli family. It is one of the finest traditional houses left in the city, its high walls hiding quiet courtyards and wooden buildings. Until 1990 the complex was a natural history museum; after conservation work funded from abroad, a permanent ethnological exhibition opened in 2002. Its two main buildings around the inner courtyard, the house and the guest house, show a large collection of traditional costumes, household tools, handicrafts, old weapons and furniture, which together give a picture of life in Kosovo in the Ottoman period. A visit is a short, pleasant walk through the rooms and the courtyard, often with a guide to explain the objects. The complex is a few minutes' walk from the Imperial Mosque and the Kosovo Museum; check the opening hours before you go.
