The Kosovo Museum is the national museum and the largest in the country, set in the heart of Pristina's old town. It occupies an elegant Austro-Hungarian-style building of 1889 that once housed the high military command, and it was founded in 1949 as Kosovo's first institution for cultural heritage. The museum has departments of archaeology, ethnography, natural history and history. One of its main halls holds a permanent archaeological exhibition, while other pieces stand in the inner courtyard and in the Archaeological Park beside the building. The Emin Gjiku complex, home to the ethnological exhibition, and the Museum of Independence also belong to it. The museum stands between the Çarshi Mosque and the Imperial Mosque, so it fits easily into a walk around the old town. Entry has usually been free in recent years, but opening hours differ between sources, so check before you go.
