The Imperial Mosque, also called the Sultan Mehmed Fatih Mosque or King's Mosque, is Pristina's most important Ottoman monument. It was built in 1461 on the order of Sultan Mehmed the Conqueror, as a six-line Arabic inscription above the entrance records, giving the year 865 of the Hijri calendar, and it ranks among the most important works of Islamic architecture in Eastern Europe. The mosque was built to dominate the town's skyline, with a large dome and a slender minaret above the old quarter. In the late 17th century, during the Austro-Ottoman wars, it was briefly turned into a church; it then became a mosque again and was restored under Sultan Mehmed IV, again after the earthquake of 1955, and in the 2000s a specialist team from Turkey prepared the plans for its modern restoration. It stands in the heart of the old town, a short walk from the Clock Tower, the Great Hammam and the Kosovo Museum, so it fits easily into a walk around the old quarter. It is an active mosque that welcomes visitors outside prayer times: dress modestly, women cover their hair, and shoes come off at the door.
