The Fort of São João Batista do Brum is a historic fort in the old district of Recife, built north of the city's first settlement on the sandy isthmus that once linked it to Olinda, to defend the entrance to the port. It was begun in October 1629 by the Portuguese military engineer Diogo Pais, on the eve of the second Dutch invasion of Brazil, but the Dutch took it in February 1630 while it was barely started. Their engineers completed it and named it Fort Bruyne after Johan Bruyne, a member of the council of commissioners that governed Dutch Brazil, a name later corrupted to «Brum». Count Maurice of Nassau described it in 1638 as a square fort with bastions, in good order. Today the fort houses the Military Museum, telling the military story of the fort and the city. Sources disagree on opening times and note it may close for private events, so check before visiting.
