The Frari is Venice's greatest Gothic church, built by Franciscans in plain red brick — but its contents make it the city's most important art space outside the museums: two of Titian's supreme paintings, his own tomb, and grand marble monuments to Doges and to the sculptor Canova in his strange pyramid. The "Assumption of the Virgin" over the high altar is the event: Venice's largest altarpiece, its blazing reds transforming Venetian painting when unveiled in 1518. You see it from the far end and it pulls you down the whole nave — by design. The church sits in quiet San Polo, away from the San Marco crush, with the Scuola di San Rocco and its Tintorettos steps away — together the best artistic half-day in Venice.
