Because he painted motion and light before painting knew them: his scenes rush diagonally and glow from within in ways understood only centuries later. Here โ not in museums โ you see him unedited by clients.
Start in the gentler ground hall, then ascend into the shock; take a mirror and hunt details โ faces in crowds, hidden animals, small storms. End in the Albergo room with the Crucifixion โ give it ten minutes alone.
An hour does it justice, forty-five minutes is the honest minimum. With the Frari next door: an artistic half-day equal to any great Italian museum.

A scuola in Venice was a wealthy charitable brotherhood, and San Rocco was the richest โ but one decision immortalised it: commissioning Tintoretto, who spent twenty-four years covering its walls and ceilings with more than sixty vast canvases. The result is called Venice's Sistine Chapel โ an entire building from one artist's hand at the height of his creative fever. The upper hall is the shock: a complete painted ceiling above completely painted walls, scenes surging with movement and a strange light centuries ahead of its time. The hand mirrors scattered through the hall are not a gimmick โ take one and study the ceiling without breaking your neck, as everyone does. The ground hall carries the life of the Virgin, including the stormy Annunciation that turns the usual serene scene into a dramatic invasion.

In the Sala dell'Albergo: his acknowledged summit, a scene that surrounds rather than faces you.
One artist, one building, a quarter century โ an obsession completed.
