A park in Shanghai's former French Concession, laid out by the French in 1909 on about ten hectares in the French style, with a lake, fountains, covered pavilions and flowerbeds; it was once the largest park in the city. In the early morning it fills with dancers, card players and tai chi practitioners, alone and in groups, giving a lively picture of everyday Shanghai life; it was fully restored in 2008 for its centenary, and the plane-tree-lined streets of the old French Concession surround it. Entry is free; the best time to come is early morning, to see the group exercise, followed by a walk through the surrounding streets of the old concession.
