A historic concert hall near People's Square, opened in 1930 as the Nanking Theatre to a European-style design by the Chinese architect Fan Wenzhao, renamed Beijing Cinema in 1949 and Shanghai Concert Hall in 1959; it seats 1,122 on two levels. It became famous in 2003, when the whole building, some 5,650 tonnes, was moved away from the noise and vibration of the elevated road beside it: it was raised 1.7 m where it stood, pushed 66.46 m, then raised another 1.68 m on its new site, reopening in October 2004. It remains one of the city's loveliest halls for classical music. The façade can be seen free at any time, while concerts are ticketed one by one; the hall is a short walk from People's Square metro station.
