A group of garden houses from the 1920s and 1930s in the old French concession, on Sinan Road opposite Fuxing Park, in a district where the concession then allowed only Western-style houses; today they are preserved in a project of about five hectares. The area holds 51 protected or retained buildings, among them houses with wooden balconies and pitched roofs first built by a Belgian property bank, now turned into shops, cafés, restaurants, a hotel and offices around paved lanes and plane trees. Wandering is free at any hour, it is liveliest in the evening and at weekends, and it pairs easily with Fuxing Park and nearby Xintiandi.
