A public museum of ancient Chinese art on People's Square in the heart of Shanghai, founded in 1952 and moved to its present building in 1996, designed in the shape of an ancient Chinese bronze «ding» vessel with a square base and a round top. It is famous for its rare cultural treasures: its galleries show ancient bronzes, Chinese porcelain through the ages, paintings and calligraphy, jade, coins and furniture, along with the costumes and crafts of China's ethnic minorities. The bronze gallery is among the most important collections of Chinese bronzes in the world, and the ceramics gallery traces the art from simple pottery to the famous blue-and-white porcelain, clearly displayed for non-specialists. Entry is free; it opens Tuesday to Sunday 09:00–17:00 and closes on Mondays, per visitor guides, with entry on showing your passport. The museum has a large new branch in the east of the city, Shanghai Museum East.
