"Milan's drawing room", its people call it: a covered arcade of 1877 linking the Duomo square to La Scala's beneath a glass-and-iron dome forty-seven metres high — Europe's grandest nineteenth-century arcade and grandfather of them all, mosaic underfoot, gold and elegance on every front. It holds Milan's oldest cafés and its fashion royalty — the original Prada here since 1913 — and passing through is a daily Milanese rite, never mere transit. Its famous tourist rite waits at the bull mosaic in the centre: three heel-spins on a spot worn hollow by millions of heels — for luck, the city says. Free and always open, being formally a street — and at night, dome lit and crowds thinned, it recovers its full original splendour.
