The Duomo-plus-terraces pass is simplest: cathedral, museum and roof on one timed ticket. Lift up, stairs down, and time the roof for near-sunset โ the marble glows and the Alps often show.
Shoulders and knees covered for everyone without exception, large bags banned, and there is a security check โ travel light and you enter faster.
An hour for interior and museum, another unhurried on the roof โ and the piazza with its Galleria completes the scene, so do not rush off.

Milan's Duomo is Italy's largest Gothic cathedral and the most embroidered building on earth: a mountain of pinkish-white Candoglia marble bristling with a forest of 135 spires and 3,400 statues โ nearly six centuries in the making, until Milanese speech coined its proverb for endless jobs: "like building the Duomo". Inside is a colossal colonnade under some of the world's largest stained glass โ but the experience nothing else offers is on the roof: you genuinely walk among the spires and statues along marble terraces, a whole carved city in the sky, with all Milan and, on clear days, the Alps at its edges. Take the lift up and the stairs down for both directions. Atop the great spire glints the golden Madonnina โ Milan's guardian, by whom its people swear; no building may rise above her unless it carries her copy on its own roof.
