The great house of the Gan family, built in the Jiaqing reign (1796–1820) on Zhongshan South Road, a maze of courtyards said to have «99 and a half rooms», though it really has more than 300; it is protected at national level and now houses the Nanjing Folk Museum. Through grey-walled lanes and gates you pass halls, small gardens with rockeries and ponds, and the rebuilt family library, and the halls show folk crafts: paper cutting, clay teapots, miniature engraving, painted opera faces, old clocks, velvet flowers, cloud brocade and Qinhuai lanterns, with craftspeople at work. Tickets are CNY 20, and it is open from 9 am to 5.30 pm, last entry 5 pm, closed on Mondays except public holidays and in summer, per visitor guides. Sanshanjie metro station is a short walk away.
