A historic quarter in the south of old Nanjing, east of Zhonghua Gate inside the wall; its name means «old east of the gate», and with its western neighbour it was the city's commercial and residential heart for more than a thousand years. Its lanes have been rebuilt since 2010 in the traditional style, with grey brick, dark timber and tiled roofs, keeping some of the old houses, and the first section opened in 2013 behind a stone gateway bearing its name. Today its lanes are full of time-honoured food shops, handicrafts, art galleries, cafés and guesthouses; in 2018 it was named one of Jiangsu's first streets of time-honoured brands, and the city wall overlooks it from the south. The quarter is free and always open, per visitor guides. It pairs best with Zhonghua Gate and a walk on the wall before sunset, then dinner in its lantern-lit lanes.
