A classical Chinese garden beside Fuzimiao that Nanjing calls «the first garden of Jinling»: first laid out in the early Ming in the mansion of the general Xu Da, it was destroyed in the Taiping war and rebuilt, served in the late Qing as the residence of the governor of Jiangsu and was visited by the Qianlong Emperor, and after 1949 it was restored, with a southern rockery added in 1960. Craggy limestone rockeries, koi ponds, covered walkways with latticed windows, a moon gate and halls fill its compact grounds, and it houses the Taiping Heavenly Kingdom History Museum, on the 19th-century movement that made Nanjing its capital. Tickets are CNY 30 by day and 40 in the evening, or 100 with an evening show, and it is open by day and in the evening until 9 pm, though the museum closes at night, per visitor guides.
