Nanjing's largest and oldest mosque, in the south of the old city near Sanshan Street; it was founded in 1388 by order of the Hongwu Emperor, founder of the Ming dynasty, for Muslims who had come from the west, and it is a protected monument of Jiangsu province. When it burned in 1430, the Muslim admiral Zheng He, leader of the great voyages to the Indian Ocean, East Africa and Arabia, asked the emperor to rebuild it from the imperial treasury; it was rebuilt, and a carved brick gateway was raised before it by imperial order. The mosque was destroyed in the wars of the nineteenth century and rebuilt in 1877 in a traditional Chinese style, with a prayer hall, a second hall, a «moon-watching» minaret tower and teaching halls; about 500 worshippers attend Friday prayers, and more than 5,000 at the Eids. Entry is free and visitors are welcome outside prayer times in modest dress, per visitor guides. Nanjing has a long tradition of halal food, best known for its fried beef dumplings and the Hui Muslim restaurants of the old city.
