A hill rising west of Gdańsk's old town, carrying the remains of seventeenth-century earthwork fortifications built to defend the city and extended in the centuries after. The main draw is the view: from the top you see the whole old town with its church towers and roofs, and behind them the shipyards and the port. That panorama explains Gdańsk better than any street in it — a Hanseatic trading city and then an industrial port, both in one field of view. On the hill stand the tall Millennium Cross and the Hewelianum science centre, which occupies part of the old fortifications and is visited on a separate ticket. Walking up from the old town takes about fifteen to twenty minutes on a moderate slope. The hill itself is free and open at any hour, and it is among the least tourist-crowded sights in Gdańsk.
