The grandest building of Qingdao's German era, a mansion built between 1903 and 1907 as the residence of the governor of the Jiaozhou Bay territory that Germany leased from 1898 to 1914; the architect Werner Lazarowicz set it at the foot of Signal Hill, looking out over the sea. It is called the «stone building» because it is mostly granite, and it blends the Wilhelmine style with German Jugendstil and other European touches, with asymmetrical red and blue roofs, turrets and marble columns; inside are wood-panelled rooms, original furniture, fireplaces and an old piano. After the German era it housed the commander of the Japanese garrison, then served from 1934 as a guest house for distinguished visitors; it was declared a national monument in 1995 and opened as a museum in 1999. Tickets are about CNY 20 from April to October and about CNY 13 the rest of the year; it opens Tuesday to Sunday from 9:00 and closes on Mondays, per visitor guides. It pairs naturally with Signal Hill Park above it.
