The best-known building of old Qingdao, a Catholic cathedral built by a German mission between 1931 and 1934 on a hill at the heart of the old town; its twin towers rise 56 metres, its nave holds more than a thousand people, and it is the largest Romanesque Revival building in Shandong province. It was designed on the model of twelfth-century German cathedrals, with a stone-and-brick façade, a red roof and two spires each topped by a cross, and its front looks down over Qingdao Bay in line with Zhanqiao Pier. Around it run the lanes of the old town that the Germans built in the early twentieth century, with their red-roofed houses; its wide square is a favourite spot for wedding photos, and today it is the seat of the bishop of Qingdao and holds services. Entry costs about CNY 10, Monday to Saturday from 8:30 to 17:00, and on Sundays from noon after the morning mass, per visitor guides. The square and the façade can be seen for free.
