The old city gate facing Guangji Bridge, topped by a three-storey tower with double-eaved roofs and five bays, rebuilt in 2004; it is a protected monument of Guangdong province and the emblem of the old city. Chaozhou's walls were built under the Song and enlarged in 1370; the south, west and north walls were taken down from the 1950s, and only the east wall survived because it shields the city from the floods of the Han River. It runs 2,132 metres from Jinshan hill to the south gate and has four gates: Shangshui, Zhumu, Guangji and Xiashui. Visitors walk on or beside the wall along the river, with the bridge and the water on one side and the rooftops of the old city on the other. The gate tower is free to visit, per visitor guides.
