A fort, lighthouse and small chapel on Guia Hill, the highest point of the Macau peninsula at about 91 metres; the fort and chapel were built between 1622 and 1638 and are part of the Historic Centre of Macau World Heritage Site. Its best-known feature is the white lighthouse built in 1864–65, the first Western-style lighthouse on the China coast, whose light can be seen about 32 kilometres away on clear days. In the little chapel, frescoes uncovered in 1998 beneath layers of paint mix European and Chinese motifs; a garden and a walking path circle the hill with views over the city and the sea, and a very short cable car climbs up from Flora Garden. The fort, lighthouse and garden are free, per visitor guides. The path around the hill is a favourite morning walk for locals, and the summit view is best on clear days.
