The only mosque in Macau, together with its only Muslim cemetery, in the Fátima district in the north of the peninsula; its roots go back to Muslims from South Asia who came with the Portuguese garrison centuries ago, and some graves in the cemetery are hundreds of years old. The present building is small, built in the 1980s for about a hundred worshippers, with a courtyard, ablution area and the headquarters of the Islamic Association of Macau; it was renovated in 2007, and the association plans a larger mosque beside it for about 600 worshippers. It brings together Macau's Muslims of South Asian and Chinese origin and workers and residents from across Asia, Muslim visitors come for Friday prayers, and it is a quiet, simple place away from the city's bustle. Entry is free and visitors are welcome outside prayer times in modest dress, per visitor guides. Halal food in Macau is limited, but a number of restaurants and hotels now offer certified halal menus, so ask the association for the nearest.
