A zoo on the wooded hillsides south of West Lake, near the Hupao spring and the Liuhe Pagoda. Opened in 1958, it has been run together with the children's park next door since 2020, keeps about 120 kinds of rare wild animals and welcomes more than two million visitors a year. It is laid out as a mountain-forest zoo, with enclosures spread across tree-covered slopes linked by paths that climb and dip. Among its best-known sights are the giant panda house, which needs a timed booking, and the sun bears that went viral online in 2023. Tickets cost CNY 20 and can be booked online up to three days ahead; it is open from 7 am to 5.30 pm from April to early October and to 5 pm the rest of the year, per visitor guides. Comfortable shoes help on the many slopes.
