The mansion of Hu Xueyan, the famous late-Qing banker and merchant, built in 1872–1875 by more than 500 workers in Shangcheng near the old Qinghefang quarter; it shows the height of wealth in a Jiangnan home, though its owner lost his fortune in the 1880s. Behind its plain grey walls lie halls of carved dark wood with blue glass windows, courtyards, and a garden of rockeries and caves, a pond, zigzag bridges and waterside pavilions. Tickets are CNY 20, and it is open from 8 am to 5.30 pm from May to October and to 5 pm in winter, last entry half an hour before closing, per visitor guides. Hefang Street is a short walk away.
