A pedestrian shopping street running north to south through old central Hangzhou, from Xihu Avenue to Hefang Street, on the line of an official road dating back to the Wuyue kingdom that was extended and widened under the Southern Song, when Hangzhou was their capital. It was the emperor's processional road, closed to ordinary people and so also called the «Forbidden Street», but shops were allowed along both sides as in the Northern Song capital, and it became the capital's busiest commercial street. Renamed Zhongshan Road in the Republican era, it now has old shops and narrow water channels along its sides. Wandering is free at any hour; the Phoenix Mosque, one of China's oldest, stands on the street itself, with Hui Muslim restaurants around it, and at its south end lie Hefang Street and the climb up Wu Hill.
