The Bloemenmarkt in Amsterdam is the most famous internationally โ a floating market on the Singel โ but it has become entirely touristic and sells packaged export bulbs more than flowers. Janskerkhof in Utrecht and The Hague's flower market are more genuine: local sellers and local customers. For the full spectacle, the Aalsmeer auction near Amsterdam is the largest flower auction in the world and can be visited very early in the morning.

Janskerkhof is a tree-shaded square in central Utrecht in front of St John's church, and its name means literally the churchyard of St John's โ which is what it was until the nineteenth century, before it became a public square. The square today is the centre of student life in the city: Utrecht University occupies several buildings around it, and the cafes along its edges fill up during term. Large trees shade it completely, which is rare for a Dutch square. Its main event is the flower market on Saturday mornings: stalls filling the square with plants, flowers and seedlings at market rather than shop prices, one of the oldest continuous flower markets in the Netherlands and frequented by residents rather than visitors. On other days smaller book or produce markets are held. Outside market hours it is simply a quiet square โ so timing is everything here.
