Tower and cathedral were built together in the fourteenth century, but the connecting nave was never fully braced with flying buttresses (the money ran out), so when the Utrecht tornado struck in 1674 the unfinished nave collapsed while tower and choir held. The nave was never rebuilt, leaving the square (Domplein) an emptiness where the church's heart stood โ the lost nave's outline is marked on the pavement today.
The climb is by timed guided tour only, booked online from the tower's site โ it sells out at summer peak. The tour is about an hour, sometimes in English. For non-climbers: the square, church and Pandhof are free and give the essence.
Unlike Amsterdam's level canals, Utrecht's have two levels: the street above and low wharves at water level, once the merchants' cellars, now cafรฉs and restaurants right at the water's edge โ the city's loveliest feature, seen whole from the tower top.

The Dom Tower is the tallest church tower in the Netherlands (112 metres) and Utrecht's symbol, seen from everywhere: an elegant Gothic tower (completed 1382) that was part of the Dom Cathedral โ until a storm in 1674 destroyed its nave, leaving the tower detached from the church (the Domkerk) by an open square where the nave stood, Utrecht's most famous architectural tale. The climb is 465 spiral steps by guided tour only, but generous: stops at the bell chamber (holding the Netherlands' largest bell) and the balconies, and the top opens all Utrecht and its distinctive low-wharf canals, with Amsterdam and Rotterdam visible on the horizon on clear days. The tower was recently restored (2017โ2024) and is back in full splendour. In the heart of the old town on Domplein, between tower, church and the Pandhof โ all of historic Utrecht's heart in one square.
