One of the largest and finest mosques in the region, completed in 965 AH (1557 or 1558 CE) under Ottoman rule. An Arabic inscription records that it was commissioned by Mehmed Beg, son of Abu al-Sa'adat and brother of a vizier, and it may have been designed by Mimar Sinan. It is a cube crowned by a dome 10.65 metres across, resting on an octagonal drum with windows, and fronted by two porticoes: an inner one with three small domes on four marble columns and an outer one with a sloping roof on octagonal pillars. Its minaret rises 34.5 metres. The mosque was badly damaged in the Second World War and nearly destroyed in the wars of the 1990s; it was fully restored between 2002 and 2004 and reopened in July 2004. Its courtyard has a stone ablution fountain, an old graveyard and trees. It welcomes visitors outside prayer times for a small fee, and a higher one to climb the minaret, per visitor guides. Modest dress and a headscarf for women are advisable. It is a few minutes' walk from the Old Bridge.
